Does my background matter?

Repeat entrepreneurs closed 96% of the time and medical founders 86%; when no background came up, 36%.

Deal rate by the founders’ background

Sample of 245 pitchesdeals out of pitches, for backgrounds shared by enough pitches

Correlation, not cause.

Founders who had built a company before closed a deal 96% of the time (23 pitches). Founders from medicine and science closed 86% (28 pitches), family businesses 83% and self-taught founders 81%.

In 44 pitches no founder’s background came up on air at all, and those closed only 36% of the time. A pitch counts once for each background among its founders. “Not mentioned” means the analysis found no mention on air, not that the founder has no experience.

This is a correlation, not a cause, and some groups are small. Experience often comes with better numbers too. The practical point holds anyway: in one or two sentences, say why you and your team are the right people to build this.
